Cameron Talks Acting Return: “I Don’t Miss Acting”

Cameron Diaz last appeared on the big screen in 2014’s Annie, and has stayed out of the spotlight ever since

Cameron Diaz is loving life away from the spotlight.

The actress, who first burst onto the Hollywood scene in 1994’s The Mask, hasn’t appeared on screen since the 2014 remake of the musical Annie — marking an impressive 20-year career with plenty of iconic hits. Now 46, Diaz explained her recent retreat from the public eye in a new interview for InStyle‘s special 25th anniversary issue.

“I started [experiencing fame] when I was 22, so 25 years ago — that’s a long time,” Diaz said. “The way I look at it is that I’ve given more than half of my life to the public. I feel it’s OK for me to take time for myself now to reorganize and choose how I want to come [back] into the world. If I decide to. I don’t miss performing.”

Still, Diaz isn’t totally ruling out a return to the big screen — she’s just focusing on other callings.

“Right now I’m looking at the landscape of wellness and all that. But whatever I do, it has to be something I’m passionate about — something that just feels effortless,” she said.

The actress has also been spending plenty of quality time with husband Benji Madden, 40. The two, who married back in Jan. 2015, live a quiet life outside of the public eye and are rarely seen out and about together.

That privacy seems to be by design.

“It’s fun to just not have anybody know what I’m up to,” she said. “Because my time is all mine. I’m not selling any films, and because I’m not selling anything, I don’t have to give anybody anything. I’m not doing this anymore. I’m living my life.”

Now in her 40s, Diaz said she’s settling into her “best decade” as she focuses on things that mean most to her, like her marriage to the Good Charlotte musician.

“I just want to build better, stronger friendships with the people who are in it with me. Of course, that includes my husband,” she said. “Getting married to him was the best thing that ever happened to me. My husband’s the best. He’s the greatest human being, and he’s my great partner.”

She continued: “I don’t know if I was ready [when I got married], but I knew Benji was special. He’s just a good man. There’s no bullshit. It’s really refreshing. I’m really grateful for him. I like doing my own thing.”

But fans might have something to celebrate soon, as Diaz teased potential new projects.

“I like creating, so I’m just looking for the project that makes the most sense for me now,” she said. “I have some things brewing, but it’s a little too early to talk about them.”

Charlie’s Angels Reunion! Lucy Liu Joined by Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz at Walk of Fame Ceremony

The angels are back together!

Lucy Liu was joined by her Charlie’s Angels costars Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz at her Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in Los Angeles on Wednesday, where she received one of the iconic stars. The trio was also joined by Demi Moore, who starred in the 2003 sequel Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle with them.

Liu, 50, took a moment to thank Barrymore, 44, and Diaz, 46, for coming out to support her, pointing out that it serves as a de facto reunion for the 2000 movie.

“My dear Angels, it’s a 20-year reunion,” Liu said as she looked over at her friends. “20 years ago we were an elite crime-fighting team, and now look at us.”

While Barrymore and Diaz didn’t speak, Moore, 56, took the stage to honor Liu and praise her before the star was revealed.

“Lucy continues to surprise me with her courage and fearless determination, seeing obstacles as mere stepping stones on the path to where you wanna go,” Moore said to her friend. “I am so happy to be here, it really is an absolute pleasure to stand up here. There is no one more deserving of this honor than you.”

The action star then took the stage, where she thanked all the people that helped her along her career.

“I am completely overwhelmed by the love and support of my friends, family, my fans,” Liu said after she was introduced. “Even though this star has my name on it, it is the result of the hard work of many brilliant writers, directors, actors, and crew who elevated me and helped me shine.”

While it’s been almost 16 years since the last Charlie’s Angels came out, there is a reboot opening in theaters later this year starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska.

Exclusive: Cameron Turned Down Oscar Invite to Present

While the Academy Awards struggled to find a host in time for their telecast, it also seems like they’re having a tough time convincing Cameron Diaz to make an appearance, because she’s not showing up at this year’s ceremony.

“This year the Oscars are really focused on bringing in some people to present that will shock the audience,” an insider exclusively tells Closer Weekly, “and Cameron was on the top of their list because it’s been so long since she’s appeared at one of these functions and she’s such a stunner on the red carpet.” The source adds, “She’s also starred alongside Glenn Close, a 2019 Oscar nominee for Best Actress.] But nobody is going to convince Cameron to make a public appearance just for the sake of a ‘stunt,’ and she has zero interest in walking a red carpet and answering questions about her ‘hiatus’ or her long time away from acting.”

The 46-year-old retired from acting after starring in Annie in 2014, and ever since then the Charlie’s Angels star has stayed away from Tinseltown for the most part. These days, Cameron seems to be focusing on her marriage to musician Benji Madden, who she has been married to since 2015. On her most recent birthday, the Good Charlotte band member had quite the romantic message on Instagram for his wife.

“Thank you for being the best friend and partner to me and taking this journey of marriage,” Benji said at the time. “The way you live your life every day, and your compassion for the world shines thru in your eyes and you inspire me to want to be the best man I can be in this lifetime. You’re the realest. I’m so grateful to be yours Always & Forever, and to call you my One&Only. True Love.” That said, it will be interesting to see if any surprise or shocking appearances are made when the Oscars air on February 24, 2019.
