As Cameron was growing up she was, like most girls, listening to modern music and acting wild. And by her mid-teens, Cameron began attending Hollywood parties and staying out until the morning. It was during this party phase of her life that Cameron ended up meeting a well-connected man who would change her whole life. Jeff Dunas spotted Cameron while she was out one night and told her that he could sign her up with the Elite modeling agency. Although Cameron initially thought his proposition was somewhat fishy, she took his card and discussed it with her family and friends.
At 16 she began her career as a fashion model. Diaz signed with top modeling agency Elite Model Management. After graduating from high school, she went to work in Japan. For the next few years, the modeling took her around the world, working for contracts with major companies. She modelled for designers such as Calvin Klein and Levi’s. Cameron appeared in magazines like Mademoiselle and Seventeen (on which she had a cover in July 1990). Here are some quotes from her Seventeen interview:
Her Start: “At a party in Los Angeles I met a photographer who suggested I try modeling. My parents were really supportive – they’ve kept me going ever since.”
Free Time: “I love sports .. probably because I grew up in a neighborhood with a lot of boys. My idea of fun is a wild, anythinggoes game of football.”
Her Style: “I’m definitely into black army boots, which aggravates my father. . . he’d rather I wore heels. (Of course, that’s easy for him to say. He doesn’t have to walk in them’)”
Her Future: “I’ll probably model until I’m old and gray. Actually, my ultimate dream is to be a zoologist. Maybe go on safari in Africa and study lions.”
Despite believeing she’d be a model ’till she was old, Cameron returned to California at age 21 and decided to audition for a small bit part in the movie “The Mask”, starring Jim Carrey. Although she didn’t have any acting experience, Cameron was cast as the female lead in the film, and we all know how her career changed overnight. She’s one of the few model-turned-actor’s who really made it.
